Before
applying for a work authorization, determine your Visa type:
F-1 Students:
There are 2 types of practical training for F-1 students -
Optional Practical
Training (OPT): must
be authorized by the Bureau of Citizenship & Immigration Services (BCIS).
International Students must apply for an Employment Authorization Document
(EAD) which
is provided
by the BCIS. The
EAD process generally takes 3 months, and you must have your
EAD in hand before you begin your employment, so it is important to plan
ahead. International Students can work for a period of one year, either
before or after their graduation, in a field that is closely related
to their field of study.
Curricular Practical
Training (CPT): is
authorized by the school, not the Bureau of Citizenship & Immigration
Services. Examples of this type of employment are: cooperative education,
work study,
practicum
or
internship
programs. To receive CPT authorization, International Students must contact
the Designated School Official (DSO) at (909) 880 - 5193. Plan ahead
as this authorization may require some time to complete.
J-1 Students:
Practical training is called Academic Training. Authorization to work
is granted by a letter from the Responsible Officer or Alternate Responsible
Officer at the International Student's school. Contact the International
Student Services Office at (909) 880 - 5193 for more details.
