What Employers
must do to hire International Students:
For F-1 and J-1 students, the student's International Student Services
Office and the student handle almost all the paperwork to secure work
authorization. Employers may save money by hiring international students
because most are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax
requirements. Unless exempt by a tax treaty, F-1 and J-1 students earning
income under "practical training" are subject to all applicable federal,
state, and local income taxes.
Please refer to the "Visa Definitions" section for more information
on the differences between the F-1 and J-1 Visas.
Instructions for completing hiring paperwork:
For Unpaid Internships and Volunteer work: no paperwork is
needed from either the student or the employer.
For all paid positions (including internships): prior to hiring
an International Student, an employer must provide the student with a
written job offer. The student then takes the job offer to their International
Student Services office to gain work authorization.
